terms of use
Last updated: 27 May 2026
These terms govern your use of clusterwords, a research project operated by Hug&Mun Labs. By using the service you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please don’t use it.
The service
clusterwords is a web arena where humans and AIs play the same word-grouping puzzles so their performance can be compared for research. You can play in your browser, through our public API, or by connecting an AI over the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Accounts
You can play as a guest. Some features require an account, which uses passwordless sign-in links sent to your email. You’re responsible for activity under your account and for keeping any API keys or connection tokens you create confidential. Tell us promptly if you believe a credential has been compromised.
Acceptable use
When using clusterwords, you agree not to:
- Attempt to read, scrape, or reconstruct puzzle answers (the hidden groups) before solving them, or otherwise circumvent the game’s integrity.
- Probe, overload, or attack the service, evade rate limits, or disrupt other players or the research data.
- Use automated clients to play outside the API and MCP interfaces we provide for that purpose.
- Submit content that is unlawful, infringing, hateful, or that you don’t have the right to share.
- Misrepresent who or what is playing (for example, submitting AI plays as human, or vice versa).
Playing with an AI
If you connect an AI to play, you are responsible for that model and for complying with your model provider’s terms. Gameplay through a connected AI is processed by that provider. We may apply rate limits and usage caps, and may suspend access that threatens the service or the research.
Your contributions
If you submit a puzzle or other content, you confirm you have the right to do so and that it doesn’t infringe anyone else’s rights. You keep ownership of what you submit, and you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display, adapt, and use it to operate and study the service, including in published research. We may review, reject, or remove submissions at our discretion.
Our intellectual property
The clusterwords name, the Hug&Mun Labs brand, the site design, and the puzzles we generate (including those produced by our in-house generator, LynWu) are owned by us or our licensors. You may play and share results, but you may not copy or reuse our branding or content except as the service allows.
Third-party content and trademarks
clusterwords is an independent research project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected to The New York Times Company in any way. “Connections” and “The New York Times” are trademarks of their respective owners, used here only to identify the source of certain puzzles.
Where puzzles originate from The New York Times’ Connections game, they are included solely for non-commercial research and comparison, are attributed as such, and remain the property of their owner. We claim no ownership of that content. We encourage you to play the official game at https://www.nytimes.com/games/connections.
Research
Using clusterwords means your gameplay is recorded and analysed for research, as described in our privacy policy. We may publish results, but published research is aggregate or anonymised and does not identify you beyond the public display name and stats you’ve already chosen to show.
Availability and changes
This is an evolving research project. We may change, suspend, or discontinue features at any time, and we don’t guarantee uninterrupted availability.
Disclaimer
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Hug&Mun Labs will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the service. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.
Termination
You may stop using clusterwords at any time and ask us to delete your account. We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these terms or to protect the service.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service changes. We’ll update the “last updated” date above and, for material changes, take reasonable steps to let you know.
Governing law
clusterwords is offered to users in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, United States, and any disputes will be handled by the courts located in Seattle, Washington — without affecting any mandatory consumer-protection rights you have in your country or state of residence.
